NFT Collections: A Journey into Web3

This is not The British Museum’s first venture into the world of Web3 and NFTs. In the past, the institution collaborated with LaCollection for three NFT collections, each offering a unique glimpse into art and history.

The first collection featured 200 digital postcards of works by Katsushika Hokusai, an esteemed Japanese artist. The auction took place in September 2021, marking the museum’s initial foray into the NFT space.

Subsequently, the second collection focused on British artist Joseph Mallord William Turner’s works. Among the tokenized versions were masterpieces like “A Storm (Shipwreck)” from 1823 and the famous “Under the Wave, Off Kanagawa,” also known as “The Great Wave,” created by a Japanese artist in 1831.

In its most recent offering, The British Museum presented an NFT artwork featuring 20 pen and chalk drawings from the collection of Venetian-born draftsman, Giambattista Piranesi.
