The popular Web3 trading card game, Gods Unchained, developed by Immutable Games, has achieved a significant milestone by listing on the Epic Games Store. This move means that the game is now accessible to Epic Games‘ enormous customer base of over 230 million PC gamers.
What sets Gods Unchained apart from other trading card games like Hearthstone or Magic: The Gathering Arena is its use of nonfungible tokens (NFTs) on the Ethereum layer-2 network Immutable X to represent each card.
Daniel Paez, the executive producer of Gods Unchained, expressed his excitement about the game’s release on the Epic Games Store, highlighting the vast reach and new audience it will bring.
The listing on the Epic Games Store comes at a time when Web3 publishers face challenges from platforms like Steam, which have not been welcoming to Web3 games and have delisted games that offer NFT perks.
To address these challenges, former MetaMask team members launched Hyperplay, a competing distribution platform that provides access to Epic Games and GOG.com stores. According to the developer’s March “2022 Year in Review” post, over 230 million PC gamers use Epic Games to discover new games.
Hyperplay aims to support Web3 titles and offer an alternative to platforms like Steam. The team recently raised $12 million to further develop and expand Hyperplay. This move underscores the increasing adoption of NFTs and blockchain-based games in the gaming industry.
As Web3 games continue to gain traction, it will be interesting to see how other platforms respond and whether they embrace the potential of blockchain technology and NFTs.
