NBA legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson has big ambitions regarding the web3 sector as he filed NFT and Metaverse-related trademark applications at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on March 16th, 2023.
The 5× NBA champion filed trademark applications for the terms “Magic Johnson’s Neighborhood” and “Building. Magic. Together.”
According to the filing for Magic Johnson’s Neighborhood, the NBA hall of fame inducted point guard aims to launch downloadable virtual goods of sports trading cards, sports memorabilia, sports collectibles, clothing, footwear, sportswear, headwear, sporting goods, food items, home goods, home repair tools and supplies, and personal electronic devices and chargers, etc, for use in the virtual environments.
Aside from these, Magic Johnson also plans to debut an online marketplace for virtual goods authenticated by NFTs, and online retail store services featuring the same.
The business tycoon intends to provide an online community forum for allowing users inside the metaverse to communicate with each other, and view, attend, and participate in educational classes, events, meetings, discussions, and workshops.
The listing notes the intention of providing software featuring information in the fields of NFTs, virtual goods, virtual services, virtual real estate, virtual restaurants, virtual motor vehicles, virtual vehicles for air travel, and virtual businesses. Similar services are listed in the filing for “Building. Magic. Together.”
This is not the first NFT and Metaverse venture of Magic Johnson. Last May, Magic Johnson partnered with NBA Top Shot to drop an NFT collection. Soon after, Magic Johnson invested in SimWin Sports, a digital sports league that employs an AI player performance model, allowing each digital athlete to develop throughout the season.
