On-chain analyst and crypto scam investigator ZachXBT exposes Monkey Drainer for stealing 7 CryptoPunks and 20 Otherside NFTs valued 520 ETH, $880k.
Blockchain analyst firm Peckshield later confirmed that the attacker transferred 120 ETH to Monkey Drainer’s address and 200 ETH into the crypto mixer Tornado cash to wash out the stolen assets.
This is not the first time the notorious hacker has committed a crime; only a week ago, they conned people into parting with assets worth 700 ETH, which is equivalent to about $1 million, by using phishing websites.
And even before that, the crypto sleuth stated that Monkey Drainer has taken over $3.5 million worth of cryptocurrency and NFTs, which means that the total amount that they have conned out of their victims is around $4.3 million at this point.
ZachXBT believes that the attacker “is likely one person,” despite the fact that it is still uncertain if Monkey Drainer is a single entity or a collection of people.
ZachXBT has reason to think that additional con artists are utilizing the playbook created by Monkey Drainer in order to conduct even more frauds. The attacker began their activities in August.
“Monkey sells his drainer for 30% cut of an attack. So other scammers are coming to him with these accounts,” he tweeted.
ZachXBT even pointed out that the only way Monkey Drainer can be stopped is if the developers do not consistently upgrade the product in order to maintain their competitive edge; otherwise, other approaches would acquire market share.
The breach of Gabriel Leydon’s Twitter account, in which a user had his MAYC NFT stolen after clicking on false links that were sent through the account, was likewise the work of Monkey Drainer.
